KEEP MUNICIPALITY CLEAN PROJECT (KMCP)
KMCP AT A GLANCE
LOCATION: Southern Sri Lanka
PROJECT TYPE: Municipal Organic Waste-to-Biogas
MODEL: Multi-Municipality / PPP-Oriented
TECHNOLOGY: Anaerobic Digestion
CURRENT PHASE: Preliminary Feasibility & Data Validation
LONG-TERM POTENTIAL: Replication Across Sri Lanka
FROM COLLECT–TRANSPORT–DUMP…
Municipal solid waste management in Sri Lanka continues to rely heavily on dumping and semi-controlled disposal, even though a substantial proportion of the waste stream consists of biodegradable organic material.
When untreated organic waste is deposited at dumpsites it produces methane, leachate and odour while contributing to land pressure, environmental degradation and public-health risks.
Coastal and tourism-intensive municipalities face additional pressure from seasonal waste generation, limited disposal capacity and the need to protect environmentally and economically important coastal areas.
…TO A CIRCULAR MUNICIPAL SYSTEM
KMCP is designed as a circular municipal waste-management system in which biodegradable waste from municipalities and commercial generators is collected, pre-treated and converted through anaerobic digestion into renewable energy and usable organic by-products.
